Midwest Flight Academy celebrates first year
DeKALB - Midwest Flight Academy, a school dedicated to high-quality, low-cost ground and flight training, is celebrating its first anniversary at DeKalb Taylor Municipal Airport this spring.
According to the director of operations, more than 100 students graduated from Midwest Flight Academy's courses this past year with a 97 percent pass rate. He said students accepted into the academy are bright and good team players, and above all are very motivated.
Midwest Flight Academy applies the same standards whether training professional or recreational pilots, with the aim of making them highly competent.
"These pilots are not only equipped to succeed but will have some serious fun while doing so," said the school's chief pilot, Mike Kurbyun.
For Kurbyun, being a pilot is unlike anything else.
"For those fortunate enough to do so for a living," he said, "it's the best job in the world!"
Kurbyun said that whether he's hauling passengers or cargo at 39,000 feet or meeting friends for a fly-in pancake breakfast at a local airport, flying is all about having fun.
In addition to providing flight training to the public, Midwest Flight Academy is working on offering a two-year associate's degree in aviation flight management starting in January. Enrollment will be limited, and students considering this career program should schedule an interview with Midwest Flight Academy as soon as possible. Some students may be eligible to start the program as early as this fall.
"Without the good will and hard work on behalf of the DeKalb Airport Authority, the Airport Advisory Board, R&M Aviation, Travel Express, the city of DeKalb, NIU, Kishwaukee College and the general aviation community at DeKalb Airport, this school could not have existed and thrived the way it does today."
